San Juan Capistrano, United States, October 13, 2026 /PressCable/ -- Mission Connection has released a guide on emotional abuse, aiming to help adults recognize the signs of abuse and the possible impacts on their mental health. The resource also covers treatment options and self-care strategies that can help a victim heal from their experiences.

Emotional abuse, as defined by Mission Connection's guide, is characterized by repeated instances of manipulative behavior that is conducted with the intention of stripping away the victim's sense of self-worth and agency. Gaslighting, constant criticism, and threats are forms of emotional abuse, and while these often appear in romantic relationships, they may also occur in families, professional relationships, and friendships.
According to the guide, abusers thrive on control, so they may prevent the victim from seeing their friends or family, accuse them of cheating without evidence, or otherwise make them feel guilty for having relationships with people other than the abuser. The abuser may also humiliate or ridicule the victim both in private and in public to gain more control. In some cases, abusers may even threaten the victim with physical harm, throw objects, strike walls, or drive dangerously with them in the car to scare them into obedience and dependence.
The effects of emotional abuse are often long-lasting. According to Mission Connection's guide, such experiences can result in anxiety, depression, trauma, and physical pain, and those affected may struggle with diminished self-esteem or difficulty trusting others long after the abusive relationship has ended. The guide also stresses that victims are never at fault for their abuse and that healing is possible with self-compassion and, if necessary, the right care.
According to the guide, most cases of emotional abuse in adults are addressed through emotional abuse counseling, which provides the victim with a structured space to process their experiences. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and related therapeutic approaches are typically used during these sessions, as they can help patients recognize and work through distorted thought patterns that developed as a result of the abuse.
Beyond therapy, Mission Connection's guide says that victims can help themselves by setting boundaries, building a support network, and acknowledging their own pain, as healing takes time and is often non-linear.
