Jul 18, 2018

SYDNEY — Usain Bolt is making a run at professional soccer in Australia. The Olympic sprint great has long expressed his love of the game. Since his retirement from track, he has tested himself with Germany's Borussia Dortmund and the Norwegian club Stromsgodset. Now, at 31, he will try out for six weeks with the Central Coast Mariners starting next month. If all goes well, he could play for a season in Australia's A-League. Australian agent Tony Rallis said Monday the Mariners and Bolt have a deal in principle, "subject to a couple of benchmarks." Rallis said the eight-time Olympic...

Rebel Wilson back in Australian courts in defamation appeal

Jul 18, 2018

MELBOURNE, Australia — Rebel Wilson has applied to Australia's highest court to increase the comic actress's payout from a defamation case against a magazine publisher. CANBERRA, Australia — Wildlife rangers said Tuesday that they had trapped a 4.7-meter (15-foot) saltwater crocodile, the largest they had ever caught in the northern Australian Katherine River and in an upstream region popular with tourists that is thought relatively safe from the killer predators. Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife said it had trapped the 600-kilogram (1,300-pound) reptile on Monday more than 300 kilometers (185 miles) from the ocean and only 30 kilometers (19 miles) downstream from Katherine Gorge, a major tourist attraction outside the Northern Territory town of Katherine. Tourists swim, canoe and take cruises in the gorge among...

New Zealand lawmaker fined for making phone call from plane

Jul 18, 2018

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand's transport minister said Monday he will pay a small fine for violating aviation rules by making a cellphone call from a plane. The Civil Aviation Authority fined Phil Twyford 500 New Zealand dollars ($340) for breaching rules it says were intended to prevent electromagnetic interference with aircraft instruments. The authority said that because Twyford ended his call before takeoff, it didn't pose a significant risk to the safety of the flight. Twyford had earlier stepped down from his role overseeing aviation safety after making the call to a staffer in May. Acting Prime Minister...
