May 21, 2018

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — An opinion writer and three newspaper executives in Fiji were found not guilty of sedition Friday in a preliminary court ruling, although a judge has yet to make a final decision in the case. Three assessors also ruled the Fiji Times company was not guilty. Under the Fiji judicial system, the judge can chose to either follow or ignore the findings of the assessors. May 21, 2018

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — An opinion writer and three newspaper executives in Fiji are awaiting a judge's verdict Friday on sedition charges in a case that has major implications for press freedom in the South Pacific nation. Each of the accused faces up to seven years in prison if convicted and the Fiji Times company, which has also been charged, could face a large fine. Many people consider the Fiji Times to be the last independent media voice in a country where many news outlets kowtow to the government. It's not the first time the newspaper company has been the...

New Zealand to spend billions on fixing hospitals, schools

May 21, 2018

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand's government plans to spend billions of dollars rebuilding rotting hospitals and schools and improving other infrastructure as the economy continues to grow at a healthy clip. The liberal government on Thursday announced its first budget plan since winning national elections last year. It has ditched tax cuts that were planned by the previous conservative government and put more money into health, education, public housing and foreign aid. The government predicts it will continue to run a small operating surplus. But the big increase in infrastructure spending isn't fully included in those figures and means...

The government will spend 294 million Australian dollars ($222 million) on improving security equipment and staffing levels at all major city airports plus 13 regional airports, government ministers said. It follows an attempt to check in a bag allegedly containing military-grade explosives into the luggage hold of an Etihad Airways Airbus A380 double-decker jet headed to the Middle East last...

SYDNEY — A 71-year-old former firefighter went on trial Tuesday over a spate of Sydney bombings and shootings that terrorized Australia's legal fraternity more than 30 years ago. Leonard John Warwick has pleaded not guilty in the New South Wales state Supreme Court to four murder charges and 20 other charges relating to crimes between February 1980 and July 1985.
