King explained. "Tennessee uses what's called an income shares model, which looks at both parents' incomes together, not just one.”

King noted that several other factors, not just the parties’ incomes, are part of the calculation. "It isn't just about incomes. The amount of time each parent spends with the child matters, and so do costs like health insurance and work related childcare," King explained, "All of that gets factored in, which is why two families with similar incomes can end up with very different figures."

King warned against parents trying to game the system by understating their earnings. "Some people are tempted to hide income or quit a good job to lower their payment. That almost always backfires," he said. "A court can assign income based on what you're capable of earning, not just what you happen to be earning at the moment."

King concluded, "Child support isn't a punishment, and it isn't a reward. It exists so children keep the stability they deserve after their parents split up. When both parents keep that in mind, the numbers become a lot easier to accept."
