A new León Law Firm guide explains 10 types of car accidents in Texas, who is usually at fault in each and how the state’s 50 percent fault rule affects what injured people can recover.
Sugar Land, United States, October 16, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- The León Law Firm, P.C. has published a guide to the types of car accidents most common on Texas roads and how fault is usually assigned in each one. The guide covers 10 crash types, from rear-end collisions to hit-and-runs, and is available at https://theleonlawfirm.com/types-of-car-accidents/
Crashes remain a daily reality in Texas. According to the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2025 Texas Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Facts report, one reportable crash occurred every 59 seconds in 2025, and 3,769 people died on Texas roads. Among those deaths, 1,201 involved single-vehicle, run-off-the-road crashes, 955 were intersection-related and 555 occurred in head-on crashes, with some overlap between categories.
The guide explains that the type of crash is a starting point for determining fault, not the final answer. Rear-end, left-turn and head-on collisions usually point to one driver. In a rear-end crash, Texas Transportation Code § 545.062 requires the following driver to keep a safe distance, so that driver is typically found at fault. Left-turning drivers must yield to oncoming traffic under § 545.152. Sideswipes, parking lot collisions and multi-vehicle pileups, by contrast, more often involve shared or disputed fault.
That distinction matters because Texas follows a proportionate responsibility system under Chapter 33 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code. An injured person who is found more than 50 percent responsible for a crash cannot recover damages. An injured person found 50 percent or less responsible can recover, but the award is reduced by that person’s share of fault.
The guide also outlines several situations that change the usual analysis. Hit-and-run drivers violate Texas law by failing to stop and exchange information, and victims may need to turn to their own uninsured motorist coverage. Rollovers can raise questions about vehicle defects. Single-vehicle crashes can involve third parties, including government entities responsible for road conditions, which carry their own notice deadlines.
In the guide, founding attorney Carlos A. León notes that key evidence, including photos, video, vehicle data and witness information, can disappear quickly after any crash. He also points out that the officer’s crash report often relies on statements made at the scene, so it is not always the final word on who caused a collision.
