Forum on Marine Biomedicine and Blue Economy Development Held in Fuzhou

Oct 16, 2026

Fuzhou, China, October 16, 2026 -- The Forum on Marine Biomedicine and Blue Economy Development of the 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee opened in Fuzhou on October 16. The forum brought together more than 150 participants, including committee members and advisers, representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in China and Fuzhou’s sister and friendship exchange cities, experts and scholars from China and abroad, and representatives of research institutions and businesses.

Under the theme “Marine Biomedicine and Blue Economy Development”, the forum focused on key challenges such as marine resource conservation, breakthroughs in core technologies, the commercialization of research outcomes, and coordinated development across countries. Participants held in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including innovation in marine biomedicine research and development, the translation of scientific and technological advances into practical applications, industrial upgrading, marine biological resource conservation, and coordinated land-sea ecological protection. They also shared experiences in policy implementation and built consensus among government, industry, and academia on new ways to promote synergies between marine biomedical innovation and the high-quality development of the blue economy. These efforts are expected to inject fresh momentum for strengthening marine ecological security and fostering an inclusive, sustainable blue economy.

During the keynote session, speakers from China and abroad discussed cutting-edge topics such as the discovery of marine bioactive compounds and the development of new drugs, the clinical translation of marine drug candidates and green manufacturing, and the sustainable use of marine biological resources alongside marine ecosystem conservation. They shared the latest research findings, examined key challenges facing the industry, and explored pathways for future development.

The discussion session featured two thematic topics: “Innovation-Driven Development and an Ecology-First Approach: New Pathways for High-Quality Development in Marine Biomedicine” and “Industry-Academia-Research-Application Collaboration: Building a New Framework for Global Cooperation in Marine Biomedicine”. Experts and business representatives exchanged views and ideas, offering valuable insights into enhancing the quality and efficiency of the marine biomedicine industry and deepening international cooperation in the marine sector.

From the sustainable use of marine biological resources to the collective protection of marine ecosystems, the 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee is charting a course toward high-quality development of the marine sector by harnessing science and technology and prioritizing ecological protection. Jointly established by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Government under the Asia-Pacific framework of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the committee has brought together 80 members from 29 countries across five continents and fostered an inclusive, collaborative, and sustainable platform for dialogue and cooperation.

The forum represents a concrete example of the committee’s efforts to extend its role as an international cooperation platform into the emerging fields of marine biomedicine and the blue economy. By building consensus through international dialogue and fostering collaboration among stakeholders throughout the process—from research and development to commercialization and conservation—the committee will continue to serve as a bridge for international cooperation. It will help ensure that innovations in marine biomedicine benefit all stakeholders while providing sustained momentum for the growth of the global blue economy and the advancement of global ocean governance.

During the event, participants will also attend activities held as part of the 2026 World Maritime Equipment Conference and take part in site visits, further expanding opportunities for cooperation and promoting tangible results.
