King said: "Understandably, many single parents going through custody battles are unsure of how to proceed and often make missteps that could potentially be detrimental to their case."

One common mistake is talking too openly to friends and family about the case. The founder of the Law Offices of Francis King in Nashville said: "Even though you might have the best intentions in trying to resolve your child custody dispute, the other parent might want to fight you further in court.’’

Publicly disparaging the other parent, e.g., via social media, is another common misstep. "This will come across to a judge as an unwillingness to co-parent, casting you in a negative light.”

Additionally, speaking negatively about an ex-spouse could ruin a parent's chances of a successful outcome in a post-divorce child custody case.

"Many assume the best way to prove someone is a bad parent is by proving they were a bad partner. But, in reality, a court will likely perceive you as bitter and unwilling to work with your ex to find a solution in a child custody case. This behavior could lead the judge to find in favor of the other side," he said.

Another error is assuming that your lawyer will take care of everything. King elaborated: "You can't slack off on important work, such as turning in paperwork promptly, gathering documents, and working closely with your attorney's office staff, even if you've hired a legal professional with extensive and relevant experience.’’

"Being fully involved in the process could aid communication with your lawyer and help determine the best strategy going forward."

King added that many clients allow emotions to lead their decisions. "Going through a child custody case is a stressful process, but don't let your emotions derail an otherwise reasonable outcome that is in the best interest of everyone.’’

"If you have made a logical decision to change the terms of your arrangement, such as asking for more parenting time or child support, ensure you and your lawyer are on the same page before requesting it," he concluded.
