2020 certainly changed the way we live in so many ways. One of those was to highlight and in many cases provide the opportunity to work from home.
One of the main benefits that people think of immediately is “No Commuting” the time and money saved in traveling to and from a place of employment can add up to significant amounts of both time and money.
Believe it or not when working from home there is a temptation to overwork, so part of the discipline that needs to be developed is creating a normal work regime within the home office, so sticking to a specific start and finish time helps overcome this temptation. However working from home is about flexibility so there is the option to build “time out” into the work hours, remember this is something we do to help create an ideal work life balance.
It does take discipline to successfully work from home. Being someone who has been doing this for over 17 years makes one aware of the pitfalls. Starting with rising in the morning, do have a shower, do get dressed, do have breakfast before walking into the home office or work area. For many of us this is part of the mindset required to successfully work from home, taking yourself from “I’m at home, yippee!” to “I am going to work now.”
Finding the right working space within the home is another very important part of the working from home equation. A quiet space with a door that closes makes a big difference to both your mindset and that of your family. The family needs to understand that you go to this area to work, and they need to respect your need for this quiet space. After all it really does not sound very professional when you are on the phone or a zoom meeting and a client or business associate can hear nothing but a baby crying, children screeching and the dog barking.
Technology plays a big part in this equation, so reasonable internet speeds are required and of course a good computer system makes a big difference to efficiency.
If you are someone that feels they can only work in a structured environment with someone else enforcing the rules, then working from home may not be the right choice.

Without setting up your own structure and a business mindset it is very easy to get halfway through the day and realise that you are still dressed in your PJ’s, no shower, breakfast didn’t happen and now someone is knocking at the door or you have a Zoom meeting and even the top half of your body isn’t dressed for it!
